Saoirse Ronan wins best actress in a musical or comedy at Golden Globes

Christine, Lady Bird, call her whatever you want — Saoirse Ronan has won the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed film.

After pointing out her mother was watching on FaceTime from Ireland, Ronan praised “all of the women who I love so much in my own life who support me every single day.”

Starring as the eponymous Lady Bird, Ronan won on her third Golden Globe nomination: She’d previously been nominated in best actress for the drama film Brooklyn, and was a supporting nominee for her breakout turn in Atonement. She received Academy Award nominations for both of those performances as well; for Lady Bird, she’s already won the New York Film Critics Circle prize for best actress and has been nominated for both the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Critics’ Choice Award, meaning Oscar recognition could soon be on the way.

Lady Bird spans the final year of high school for Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, an indefatigable and strong-willed woman who’s preparing to leave home. The movie intimately explores her love life, her friendships, and her flawed but loving relationships with her working-class parents (Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts).

Ronan beat out three Golden Globe winners for best actress — Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and Emma Stone — as well as first-time nominee Margot Robbie (I, Tonya).
