Jeopardy gets pop culture spinoff on Amazon Prime Video

What is... a pop culture twist on a classic format?

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a Jeopardy pop culture spinoff, marking the franchise's debut on streaming. Pop Culture Jeopardy! offers a twist on the show's format that combines the academic rigor of the game show with the excitement of popular culture.

In teams of three, contestants will need to be experts on categories ranging from Alternative Rock to The Avengers, Broadway to MMA, or Gen Z to Zendaya in order to win the grand prize.

A host will be announced at a later date, but Jeopardy's Michael Davies is on board to executive produce. Information about the contestant application process will also be made available soon.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new Jeopardy! spinoff series,” Suzanne Prete, president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television, said in a statement, calling the iteration a "fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind." Adding, "It’s going to be a must-watch for long-time viewers and new fans alike.”

Previous Jeopardy spinoffs of game shows past include VH1's Rock & Roll Jeopardy and Crackle's Sports Jeopardy. The original daytime version of Jeopardy launched in 1964 and the syndicated version in 1984, leading to other variations including Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time, Jeopardy! National College Championship, and Celebrity Jeopardy!

Co-host Mayim Bialik announced her departure from the syndicated version last year after stepping in during season 38, leaving Ken Jennings as sole host.
