It Follows is proving to be 2015’s Little Horror Movie That Could. The David Robert Mitchell-directed film about a sexually transmitted curse grossed a highly impressive $160,089 when it opened in just four cinemas earlier in the month and will platform out to 1,200 screens this weekend, following the decision by distributors RADiUS-TWC to delay the movie’s planned VOD release. The film has also garnered extremely positive revews: my colleague Chris Nashawaty applauded It Follows for its “wit, style, and an almost suffocating sense of dread” and the movie currently has a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“It’s crazy,” says the film’s star Maika Monroe (The Guest). “I had no idea this was going to happen. I could tell on the set we were making something special, something different. But I didn’t see it as being as commercial as it’s become, because it’s very different. It’s weird! I try and stay away from reading reviews. But just hearing how people are loving it—I mean, I was in a workout class the other day and someone came up and said, ‘I saw the film and you were incredible’—that’s amazing. That’s why we do it. It was supposed to be a small release and then all of a sudden it’s doing incredibly well. People are like, ‘It’s not playing here! I’m driving two hours to a movie theater to see it!’ So I think people are excited it’s in a wide release now.”

You can hear Monroe talk more about It Follows on The Editor’s Hour tomorrow on Sirius XM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio channel and on Entertainment Weirdly on Monday.
