Rogue One: Dermot Mulroney plays cello on Michael Giacchino's Star Wars score

You know him best as an actor, but Dermot Mulroney has a surprising hidden talent that (sort of) scored him a role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: he’s an accomplished cellist.

The 53-year-old actor is featured on the Rogue One soundtrack as the 11th chair in the cello section, a spot he’s held on several scores from composer Michael Giacchino, including Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, and Jurassic World, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“Obviously, I knew about orchestras, I knew how to play in one, I knew about scoring orchestras,” he told the Times. “But then when I start doing it, it really became a different perspective for me and such a source of pride — but pride related to the fact that I’m included in an exclusive group of musicians…really just towering talent. I’m more of a journeyman player.”

Mulroney’s journey with the instrument began as a child, and he won solo competitions as a teenager and performed in a college orchestra at Northwestern University. He put the cello down after graduating, save for some time in a band, but when he met Giacchino in 2005, he challenged the composer to hire him for his next movie scoring session.

Fans of Mulroney’s have seen his musical prowess before, in roles like 1991’s Samantha, and his recent guest spot on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, where he played his music on screen.
