Ryan Gosling has joined the long list of celebrities paying tribute to Debbie Reynolds, saying that the late star was an inspiration to the cast and crew of his critically-lauded musical La La Land.

The actor’s remarks came at the Palm Springs Film Festival on Monday, as he accepted the Vanguard Award on behalf of La La Land. Joined on stage by the director and composer of his film, Damien Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz, Reynolds credited the actress’ 1952 hit Singin’ in the Rain with helping to shape their modern-day musical.

“I wish I could have said this in person, but I’d like to thank Debbie Reynolds for her wonderful career of work,” Gosling said. “She was an inspiration to us every day — we watched Singin’ in the Rain every day for inspiration, [she was] a truly unparalleled talent. So, thank you to her for all of that inspiration.”

Reynolds died last Wednesday at the age of 84, one day after the death of her daughter, actress Carrie Fisher.
