20th Century Women ticket sales to benefit Planned Parenthood

The studio behind 20th Century Women, A24, announced Thursday it is making a donation to Planned Parenthood in honor of anyone who sees the film in theaters this weekend.

The film stars Annette Benning, Greta Gerwig, and Elle Fanning as a group of women raising a boy together in 1979. Planned Parenthood features prominently in 20th Century Women, as proven in a new featurette that includes an interview with Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards.

“[Writer and director Mike Mills] has done a fabulous job in this film of covering real women’s stories in a way that is accessible and it actually generates conversations,” Richards says in the clip.

She also points out that Fanning’s character in the film gets her first birth control pills at Planned Parenthood and highlights the fear some Americans are feeling right now in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to revamp the healthcare system.

“Even though birth control became legal in the ’70s, we are now headed into a time where there are folks in elective office who think we’re going to go back to the 1950s,” she says. “I’ve certainly seen an outpouring of young people in this country who can’t imagine going back to a day before women had access to rights and to healthcare that helped them plan their families.”

20th Century Women debuted in limited release this December and opens nationwide Friday. Watch the featurette above.
