Kathryn Bigelow, John Boyega capture a city in chaos in tense Detroit trailer

A violent period of civil unrest rocked the largest city in Michigan — and the nation — across five tense days in 1967. Now, Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow is reframing the Detroit riots for contemporary audiences with her latest feature, Detroit, a new trailer for which premiered Thursday morning.

The clip offers an extended look at Bigelow’s long-gestating directorial follow-up to her 2012 drama Zero Dark Thirty, which features an ensemble cast of actors like Samira Wiley, John Krasinski, Anthony Mackie, Will Poulter, Jacob Latimore, and John Boyega, who plays a security guard embroiled in a police investigation into the deaths of three young people after authorities forcefully raided the Algiers Motel, where they reportedly intimidated the building’s occupants.

“When I went in there, three kids had been killed,” Boyega says in the footage, as he sits opposite two interrogating officers. Attempting to pin the deed on him, one of the men asks: “So, they were killed right before you got there? You carry a .38, right?” to which Boyega responds: “I didn’t do it.”

Sequences that follow recreate public demonstrations in the city’s streets, the events at the Algiers Motel, and the trial that resulted.
