Wonder Woman director clarifies sequel's status: 'Excited and hopeful'

Jenkins isn't officially coming back — yet

Patty Jenkins is deflecting rumors like bullets off Diana’s gauntlets. The Wonder Woman director was recently quoted as seemingly confirming her return for a sequel to the DC film, but Jenkins took to social media to clarify the status of development.

“Hey All. Thanks for the excitement but that wasn’t a confirmation,” she wrote in a tweet on Friday. “Just talking about ideas and hopes. But still excited and hopeful ;)”

Jenkins appeared at a Women in Film screening of Wonder Woman, followed by a Q&A, earlier in the week. According to Advocate magazine, she told an audience, “I had an epiphany about Wonder Woman 2. I was like, you don’t have to do this. It doesn’t have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany. I was like, Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy? And then I suddenly realized, it’s not more, it’s another movie. It’s its own movie. And it’s got to be great.”

Those comments echo what she said previously about her ideas and passion for the next chapter in Diana’s saga. Back in April, Jenkins also told EW she already envisioned where a sequel could take place. “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” she said at the time. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

As of now, Warner Bros. still hasn’t announced Wonder Woman 2. But with the first film now the highest-grossing live-action film from a female director and poised to become the highest-grossing installment of the DC Expanded Universe thus far, it seems like only a matter of time before a sequel gets the green light.

San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner, after all, so keep your eyes peeled.
