James Franco thinks it would be 'beautiful' to see Tommy Wiseau at Oscars

Since its release in 2003, actor-writer-director Tommy Wiseau’s so-berserk-it’s-brilliant film The Room has garnered a massive cult following around the globe. But the idea that the mysterious, mercurial Wiseau might get invited to the Oscars because of his entertainingly shambolic movie seemed preposterous until very recently. Then, in March of this year, James Franco screened a work-in-progress version of his latest directing project The Disaster Artist, which details the making of The Room, at the SXSW Festival. The film was extremely well received and even generated Oscar buzz, which, if said chatter proves prescient, could lead to the sight of Wiseau on the red carpet of the Academy Awards. Franco, who plays Wiseau in the film and of course cohosted the Oscars with Anne Hathaway back in 2011, argues that would be fitting.

“You know, when Tommy released The Room, the legend is that it cost about $6 million, [even though] it looks like it cost about six dollars,” laughs Franco. “[But] he distributed it on his own dime and he kept it in theaters for two weeks to qualify for the Oscars. So, I think it would be the most beautiful, ironic, full circle-bow on this whole package if Tommy Wiseau did get to go to the Oscars.”

The Disaster Artist costars Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, Alison Brie, and Sharon Stone, among others. The film is released Dec. 1.
