Michael K. Williams says his role was cut from Han Solo movie

Looks like Michael K. Williams won’t be headed to a galaxy far, far away after all.

Earlier this year, The Wire alum was cast in the upcoming young Han Solo movie in an unspecified role. But with the film now undergoing reshoots after Ron Howard signed on to replace previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Williams has revealed that his character has been cut.

In an interview with Deadline, Williams said he played a “kickass” half-human, half-animal character that he helped develop with Lord and Miller, but because the reshoots clashed with his schedule on another project, his character won’t be in the final version.

“I feel great about what I created with the directors that I worked with,” Williams told Deadline. “It is what it is.”

Williams is currently shooting the drama The Red Sea Diving Resort in South Africa alongside Ben Kingsley, Chris Evans, and Haley Bennett, and he also stars in the SundanceTV series Hap and Leonard. He added that he holds no ill will towards Howard or Lucasfilm and that his character being cut was only a matter of scheduling.

“When Ron Howard got hired to finish out the film, there were some reshoot issues that needed to be done in regards to my character, in order for it to match the new direction which the producers wanted Ron to carry the film in,” Williams explained. “And that would have required me on a plane a month ago to London, to Pinewood, to do reshoots. But I’m here, on location in Africa. It’s scheduling. I’m not going to be back on the market until the end of November after Hap and Leonard, and for them to wait that long for me, that would have pushed back the release date, which I believe is in May 2018. They wanted me now; I couldn’t go. So they had to clip-clip-clip.”

“I don’t think that me not being in the Star Wars family is final,” he added. “I left with a very good taste in my mouth about the whole family, and I hope that I left a good taste in their mouth. They’re a great group of people, the Lucas family.”

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The still-untitled Han Solo film, which stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Glover, is scheduled to hit theaters May 25, 2018.
