Jamie Bell costars in the Gloria Grahame biopic

Film stars don’t die in Liverpool; they do the hustle, guzzle drinks, and flirt with their neighbors instead.

In an exclusive clip from Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, the upcoming biopic starring Annette Bening as Oscar-winning actress Gloria Grahame, she sizes up an attractive man checking his mail in the lobby of their shared building. “Hey, you’re the next-door guy, right?” she asks the man, Peter Turner (played by Jamie Bell).

“Which makes you the girl next door,” he replies.

“Have you seen the movie Saturday Night Fever?” she continues. When he confirms, she asks, “So you like disco dancing? … If I make you a drink, will you come into my room and hustle with me? I need a partner for my dance class.”

“If you fix me a drink, I’ll come in and clean your bathroom,” he responds, as Grahame slinks through the doorway.

Grahame and Turner would go on to become inseparable for a brief period in the late 1970s, and their courtship is chronicled in director Paul McGuigan’s drama. The film is based on Turner’s memoir of the same name, in which he recounts his days wooing the former screen icon, who appeared in movies including The Bad and the Beautiful, It’s a Wonderful Life, Crossfire, and Oklahoma! throughout the 1940s and 50s.

Though Grahame’s personal life was the subject of controversy (her relationship with her fourth husband reportedly began when he was only 13 years old), the film charts her whirlwind romance with Turner as they bond in Europe and New York City. The story is told through their respective memories of their time together, which was cut short by a grim medical diagnosis that ultimately led to Grahame’s death in 1981, at age 57.

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, which also stars Julie Walters and Vanessa Redgrave, was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics ahead of its world premiere at the 2017 Telluride Film Festival. There it will begin a bid for awards attention, with stops at TIFF and the BFI London Film Festival before hitting theaters for an Oscar-qualifying run later this year.
