Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller suffer through family dysfunction in The Meyerowitz Stories trailer

Meet the Meyerowitz family

Noah Baumbach, one of the preeminent directors of uniquely New York stories, is back with a new film and a new dysfunctional family. In the latest trailer for The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), coming to Netflix this October, we meet Mr. Harold Meyerowitz (Dustin Hoffman doing his best grumpy grandpa) and his children who bear with his behavior.

Harold is the kind of man who’ll take a swig from another patron’s wine glass and explode over a game of pool — all while his two sons, Matthew (Ben Stiller) and Danny (Adam Sandler), and daughter, Jean (Elizabeth Marvel), watch in horror.

Adam Driver — another Baumbach film veteran, like Stiller — also features in the cast, which includes Emma Thompson (as the “plastered” Maureen), Grace Van Patten, Candice Bergen, Judd Hirsch, and Rebecca Miller.

“It was very specifically written, what I presented you with, but we spent a long time working through it,” Baumbach said of the process with Hoffman. “If I have the script in a way that I feel like it feels right to me, I’m more interested in seeing the actor find their way through what I’ve written. … If it’s cast right, even if they’re not fitting exactly right away, we have to stay what’s been written to find it. Rather than scrap it and rewrite the dialogue.”

After receiving critical praise and awards recognition out of Cannes, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) will make its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The work will then hit Netflix on Oct. 13.

Baumbach wrote the screenplay for the film, which is produced by Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub, and Eli Bush.
