Why Suspiria is the ultimate Halloween movie

Scott Derrickson is now best known for directing last year’s Marvel blockbuster, Doctor Strange. But Derrickson began his filmmaking career with 2000’s horror sequel Hellraiser: Inferno and has repeatedly returned to the terror tale genre, overseeing films like 2005’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2012’s Ethan Hawke-starring chiller, Sinister.

So what films does Derrickson suggest EW readers check out this Halloween season?

“I can always recommend Halloween movies!” enthuses the director. “Two of the best films I saw [recently] were The Witch and Green Room. I loved both of them. With Green Room, it’s the transportation into what felt like a very realistic, and believable, frightening world, this backwoods, white supremacist punk club, where things go wrong. There was just something about the immersion into that world that was upsetting and disturbing from the very start. Don’t Breathe was also good. If you want to go back, I can make recommendations all day. Suspiria, the Dario Argento movie, is moving its way up to becoming my favorite horror film of all-time. I’ve watched it again in the last year, and every time I see it, its influence on me continues to grow. Probably the most influential horror film on me personally, that I’ve seen. If people haven’t see that, that’s the one to check out.”
