Anya Taylor-Joy, Olivia Cooke make a killing in Thoroughbreds trailer

There’s a lot to indulge in the first frenetic trailer to Thoroughbreds. There’s Anya Taylor-Joy from New Mutants and the Unbreakable–Split cinematic universe as one-half of a killer pair with Olivia Cooke, a standout from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. There’s a posthumous screen appearance from Anton Yelchin, playing a man who gets wrapped up in their shenanigans. And there’s the footage itself, which charges through scenes of guns and posh lifestyles to lay out a devious “business proposition.”

It’s a lot to take in, but what is this film actually about?

First-time writer-director Cory Finley weaves together a story about childhood friends Lily (Taylor-Joy), now an upper-class teenager with a fancy boarding school on her transcript, and Amanda (Cooke), more keen on becoming a social outcast than landing a coveted internship. The two, though initially at odds, reunite and bond over their shared disdain for Lily’s step-father. So they decide to do something about it. That’s when we meet the hired hustler, Tim (Yelchin), who’s not “f—ing Rambo” or anything but knows how to shoot a gun.

Though the footage and film synopsis dance around exactly what these women want Tim to do with that gun, the conclusion seems clear — and it doesn’t bode well for good ol’ step-daddy.
