Borg vs. McEnroe trailer serves up Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe

Last year, Battle of the Sexes chronicled Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs’ historic match. And now, tennis’ “perfect rivalry” comes into focus with Borg vs. McEnroe.

The trailer for director Janus Metz’s film, which EW is exclusively debuting, goes inside the 1980 Wimbledon Championships and the two men destined to meet in the finals. Shia LaBeouf stars as heated American up-and-comer John McEnroe, while Sverrir Gudnason plays established Swedish champion Björn Borg.

“You don’t understand what it takes to play tennis,” McEnroe declares to the press, tired of being seen as the villain. “I go out there and give everything for this game. Everything. Everything in me gets left out on that court. And none of you understand it because none of you do it.”

“I am so excited about the release of Borg vs. McEnroe in the states,” Metz said in a statement. “Everyone did a tremendous job on this film, bringing to life the famous rivalry between Björn Borg and John McEnroe and the absolute glory days of the tennis world. Shia as McEnroe is on fire. He was so dedicated to work with and I think he gave a performance of a lifetime.”
