The hobbits from Lord of the Rings reunited at Wizard World Philadelphia

They destroyed the One Ring, vanquished the Dark Lord Sauron, and returned victorious to Hobbiton. And now, three of the four actors who played the hobbits in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies have reunited to reflect on their roles.

The actors who played Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, and Peregrin “Pippin” Took staged a LOTR reunion at Wizard World Philadelphia on Saturday, speaking on a panel titled “Stories From The Shire: A Conversation With Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Billy Boyd.”

In addition to the proper reunion panel, all three actors were at the convention both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, they ran into Solo actor Joonas Suotamo, who posted a selfie with them captioned, “Finally met my heroes — the hobbits from Lord of The Rings!” Predictably and hilariously, the Chewbacca actor towered over the shorter hobbit actors.

Dominic Monaghan, who played Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck, wasn’t in attendance, but Sean Bean was at the convention. Bean played the human warrior Boromir, who died saving two hobbits from monstrous Uruk-hai. In 2017, Bean told EW that it was his favorite onscreen death ever (quite the accolade from an actor whose characters are known for dying), saying “you couldn’t ask for a more heroic death.”

The Lord of the Rings cast certainly bonded during filmmaking; after wrapping, the actors who played the Fellowship of the Ring (including Wood, Astin, Boyd, and Bean, but excluding Gimli actor Jonathan Rhys-Davies) each got a tattoo of the number “9” written in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Elvish Tengwar script. The gesture was recently echoed by the Avengers actors, who got matching tattoos of their superhero team’s logo.
