Matt Smith joins Jared Leto in Morbius movie

During his three-season run on Doctor Who, Matt Smith faced off against a whole host of memorable villains — including vampires. (The vampires technically turned out to be vampire fish from outer space, but still. Vampires.) Now, Smith will once again be sharing the screen with a nocturnal creature of the blood-sucking persuasion: The British actor is in final talks to join Jared Leto in Sony’s upcoming Morbius movie, EW has confirmed.

Smith’s role is being kept under wraps (although it’s described as a “major” one). What we do know so far is that the film will center on Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a Marvel Comics character known as Morbius the Living Vampire. In the comics, Morbius was a scientist whose attempts to cure himself of a blood disease turned him into a vampire, fangs, and thirst for blood included. He was introduced as a foe for Spider-Man, but over the years, he’s become more of an antihero, grappling with his own tragic flaws and bloodthirsty tendencies.

Daniel Espinosa, who previously helmed the alien thriller Life, is directing Morbius from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (the showrunners of Netflix’s Lost in Space).

Morbius is the latest installment in Sony’s series of films based on characters licensed from Marvel: The studio previously struck a deal with Disney to allow Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to appear in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his own standalone movies, but Sony still owns the rights to a whole stable of Marvel characters (including Venom, who Tom Hardy just brought to the big screen).

Smith, who is best known for his roles in Doctor Who and The Crown, will next appear in the as-yet-untitled Star Wars: Episode IX.
