Captain Marvel gets a delightfully retro '90s website

Captain Marvel may feature some sleek, cutting-edge alien tech, but its website is decidedly old school.

Ahead of the film’s release on March 8, Disney and Marvel have launched a delightfully retro website that looks like it’s straight out of Captain Marvel’s mid-’90s setting. The site’s hosted on Marvel.com, but it looks like the sort of thing you’d find on Angelfire or GeoCities in 1995, complete with rainbow word art, twinkly GIFs, a guest book, and a visitor counter.

There’s even a hilariously clunky “Spot the Skrull” game that asks you to decide whether someone is a human or secretly a shape-shifting alien in disguise. It looks exactly like the kind of site you’d visit after sitting through the AOL dial-up noise and yelling at your mom to get off the phone so you could use the computer.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as the titular hero, and the film’s trailers have already teased plenty of references to the ’90s setting, from Nick Fury’s pager to the dearly departed Blockbuster.

“The ‘90s doesn’t feel that long ago to us because we’re really old,” co-director Anna Boden previously told EW. “But doing this movie has really made us realize how out of date so much stuff from the ‘90s actually is, and we’ve been having a lot of fun with that.”
