Disney announces opening dates for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Log these dates in the navicomputer:

The Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park lands will open in Disneyland on May 31 and at Walt Disney World on Aug. 29.

Now the bad feeling about this — not all of the rides will be finished on opening day.

Also, to prevent anticipated overcrowding, Disney is requiring guests to make a reservation to visit the attraction at Disneyland from opening day until June 23. The reservation will have no additional cost, and Disney said details on how and when they can be made will be revealed at a later time.

Park visitors who stay at one of Disneyland’s own hotels during that time will automatically receive one reservation for each guest.

Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced the dates, which are on the early side of what was expected, at a shareholders meeting Thursday.

Previously, the company only said the Disneyland attraction in Anaheim would open this summer, while the Orlando version would open in the fall.

Another factor that might ease overcrowding is that the park is opening in stages, so not all the rides will be ready at the beginning.

In Phase One, the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride and most of the shops and restaurants will be fully operational, but the other major ride, Rise of the Resistance, won’t be ready until Phase Two, which Disney only says will begin “later this year.”

Entertainment Weekly has toured the work in progress. Here is our complete collection of stories about how Galaxy’s Edge aims to make guests part of their own Star Wars story, detailing the shops, the rides, the food, and more.

Let’s explore the planet of Batuu and the crossroads town of Black Spire Outpost, where the journey starts.
