Tomb Raider sequel with Alicia Vikander in development with new writer

More than a year after Alicia Vikander debuted as Lara Croft in 2018’s Tomb Raider, MGM and Warner Bros. are looking to jumpstart a sequel.

MGM tapped Amy Jump, who adapted High-Rise for actor Tom Hiddleston and co-wrote Free Fire with Ben Wheatley, to start development on Tomb Raider 2, EW has learned.

Plot details are still under wraps at this point, but given that the first film, written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, was rooted so heavily in the prequel video game trilogy, fans can probably come up with a few guesses.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider saw a younger Lara Croft than we know from the Angelina Jolie era as she set out on a voyage to the mystical island of Yamatai in search of answers to her father’s disappearance. The setting was pulled directly from the first of the Square Enix video games. By the end, Croft realizes that the nefarious Trinity organization has a farther reach than she realized, but now she has her signature double pistols.

Uthaug’s Tomb Raider movie earned $274.7 million worldwide with its theatrical release, though critics largely didn’t take to the film.

Rise of the Tomb Raider, the second game in the prequel Croft series, brought Lara to Siberia in search of the legendary city of Kitezh. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released in September 2018, saw Lara inadvertently kickstarting the Mayan apocalypse. Where this movie sequel treatment will take Lara next, that’s for MGM to know and the rest of us to find out.
