Amy Adams spirals into a Gone Girl scenario with first The Woman in the Window trailer

Staring out the window while drinking booze didn’t do well for Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl or Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train. It certainly doesn’t do Amy Adams any good in the Woman in the Window trailer.

Based on A.J. Finn’s psychological suspense thriller, which was hailed as the next Girl on the Train by critics at the time, comes a cinematic mind-bendy drama that makes us question what’s real and whether our protagonist is a reliable narrator. Adams already gave us one of these with the HBO adaptation of Sharp Objects, but now she’s taking this sub-genre to the big screen.

The Woman in the Window stars the always-an-Oscar-nominee-never-an-Oscar-winner as agoraphobic Anna Fox, who likes to drink during the day because she can’t leave her apartment, even though drinking tends to mess with her anxiety meds. (The results are a lot of Adams screaming at trick-or-treaters to leave her stoop.) She strikes up a friendship with her next-door neighbor, Jane Russell (Julianne Moore), but everything changes.

One night, a scream draws Anna to her window and she sees Jane being stabbed to death in her apartment across the street. She calls the cops, but a detective comes over with Jane’s husband (Gary Oldman), who claims she didn’t see what she saw. Making matters even more confusing is the fact that a different woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) shows up claiming to be Jane. Did Anna hallucinate it all or are they pulling some kind of ruse?

The film’s release is not without controversy after a New Yorker piece published in February (which could spawn its own suspense novel) alleged the book’s author, born Dan Mallory, has engaged in deceit throughout his career.

Joe Wright (Darkest Hour) directs The Woman in the Window, which also stars Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Fred Hechinger. The film was one of the 20th Century Fox titles in limbo after Disney’s purchase of the studio, but the movie is still set to be released in theaters on May 15, 2020.
