Pain and Glory stars Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas reuniting for new movie

Academy Award-winner Penélope Cruz and the freshly Oscar-nominated Antonio Banderas are on track to recreate the emotional magic of last year’s Pain and Glory as they re-team for another major movie.

Spanish production company Mediapro announced Thursday the Pedro Almodóvar collaborators will costar in the upcoming movie Competencia Oficial from Argentinian filmmaking duo Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.

Banderas is set to play an actor whose performative methods clash with the fellow star (Oscar Martínez) during the preparation of a new film financed by a an overbearing millionaire and directed by an eccentric, well-respected filmmaker played by Cruz.

On-location filming will take place this February in Spain, where Mediapro also produced controversial filmmaker Woody Allen’s upcoming movie Rifkin’s Festival starring Gina Gershon, Wallace Shawn, Sergi López, and Christoph Waltz.

In addition to starring in Pain and Glory last year, Cruz and Banderas previously appeared together in cameo roles in Almodóvar’s 2013 comedy I’m So Excited.

Representatives for Banderas and Cruz did not immediately return EW’s request for more information. A release date for Competencia Oficial has yet to be announced.
