Russell Crowe and stars defend Master and Commander after critic calls it 'boring': 'Kids these days'

Russell Crowe isn't here for anyone slandering his film Master and Commander.

The actor came to the film's defense on Saturday to respond to a Twitter user who recommended anyone having issues sleeping during the pandemic watch the 2003 production. Crowe portrayed Royal Navy captain Jack Aubrey in the adventure drama, which is set during the Napoleonic wars and based on Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin book series.

"Lots of folk complaining about lack of sleep during the pandemic. May I recommend Master And Commander starring the usually captivating, attention-grabbing Russell Crowe," wrote Ian McNabb. "I've never made it past the ten minute mark. You're welcome. And thanks Russell."

Crowe replied, "That's the problem with kids these days. No focus. Peter Weir's film is brilliant. An exacting, detail oriented, epic tale of fidelity to Empire & service, regardless of the cost. Incredible cinematography by Russell Boyd & a majestic soundtrack. Definitely an adults movie."

The public discourse had Twitter lit up and Master and Commander, leading many others to share their reviews of the film. Among those who had Crowe's back include directors Peter Ramsey and Jorge R. Gutierrez, and actors Sebastian Roché and Josh Gad.

"That guy's a fucking idiot, Russell," tweeted Ramsey. "Peter Weir is a god, the movie's amazing and you're amazing in it. Thank you."

"Great film, great performance and Peter Weir is a brilliant director," Roché, who starred in The Man in the High Castle and Sex and the City, said.

Gutierrez exclaimed, "Brilliant brilliant film!!!"

Gad also sang the drama's praises calling it a "perfect film."
