Cher to perform 'Believe,' receive Icon Award at 2017 Billboard Music Awards

Cher is adding yet another gilded statuette to her massive awards mantle.

Dick Clark Productions and ABC announced Thursday the Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy-winning pop music legend will receive the Icon Award at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. She’ll also take the stage that night at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena to give her first awards show performance in over 15 years.

The 70-year-old is expected to sing her 1998 smash “Believe,” the memorable dance anthem that spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 nearly two decades ago. The song would go on to become one of the biggest hits of all time, selling around 20 million units worldwide to date.

“I’m honored to receive the 2017 Billboard Music Awards Icon Award and take the stage to celebrate my love of music with my fans,” Cher said in a statement. “Seeing so many powerful artists — especially female artists emerge and take their place in history through the years — has been incredible. I’m honored to be amongst the previous Icon Award winners and to celebrate this milestone achievement by performing ‘Believe’ on the show.”

The Icon Award — introduced in 2011 — has been presented by Billboard to the likes of Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, and Céline Dion in the recent past.

Previously announced performers at this year’s edition of the annual awards show include Dion, Camila Cabello, Bruno Mars, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Lorde, Imagine Dragons, Florida Georgia Line, and John Legend.

Cher is currently in the midst of her Las Vegas residency show, Classic Cher, which began in February.

The 2017 Billboard Music Awards are set to air liveSunday, May 21 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
