Kelly Clarkson fact-checks fans' interpretations of her lyrics

Have you been misunderstanding your favorite Kelly Clarkson song?

The original American Idol is responsible for some of the biggest pop anthems of the new millennium, from “Since U Been Gone” to “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” so it’s no surprise that fans have some very strong feelings about her lyrics and what they mean. But are they correct? Well, in the video above, Clarkson sets listeners straight as she dives into their interpretations of her most beloved hits in the video above.

In EW’s new cover story about Clarkson, the singer revealed that the song fans stop to talk to her about the most is “Piece by Piece.” “Anywhere I go, that’s the only song people mention,” she says. “Which says something about society because it’s a very dark song. I’m always like, ‘Thank you, and I’m sorry,’ because it’s not a particularly great song to relate to. But it’s nice to know you’re not alone.”

Clarkson calls that song — which recounts how her relationship with husband, Brandon Blackstock, healed the wounds left by her absentee father — the sequel to 2004’s “Because of You.” That song also inspired plenty of memorable fan encounters: “I would have people come up to me and reveal things you don’t even tell your spouse,” she says. “Like, I cannot believe that chick or that dude just told me everything — about being molested, about being raped. They feel like because I wrote that song and helped them, they’re comfortable saying things you probably only a tell a shrink.”
