Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, more stars pay tribute to Tom Petty

After a day of conflicting reports about the health of legendary singer Tom Petty, the 66-year-old music legend has died following massive cardiac arrest.

Petty’s longtime manager released a statement saying, “On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader, and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends.”

Numerous celebrities and members of the music community paid tribute to the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers singer throughout the day and into the night as the star’s death was initially confirmed by LAPD sources on Monday afternoon and later walked back. “We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting,” the LAPD wrote on Twitter.

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and more hit Twitter to remember Petty’s legacy and work.

“This is unbearable. Vegas and now a great music hero has passed,” Sheryl Crow tweeted before Petty’s death was officially confirmed. “You brought us so much joy, @tompetty. We will miss you. I feel like today, the music truly died. Can’t go see/hear music and be safe and one of the greats just passed.”

“Tom Petty was one of the biggest inspirations for me as a musician,” tweeted Kings of Leon’s Nathan Followill. “This one will hurt for a long time. Truly one of the sweetest people on earth. Rest in Peace brother.” Followill also later tweeted that he was pulling for Petty after it was revealed he had not died.

“No words. Just thanks,” wrote Petty’s frequent collaborator, director Cameron Crowe.
