Lady Gaga debuts radiant 'Joanne' music video

We still don’t know where she thinks she’s going, but the message behind Lady Gaga’s new music video seems to favor the beauty of the journey over the destination.

In the midst of the final stages of her current world tour, the singer-songwriter unveiled Friday the gorgeous visual for her latest release: a stripped, piano-driven version of the title track from her fifth solo album Joanne.

Initially included on the 2016 LP with string and percussion, the emotional ballad already served as a moving tribute to Gaga’s late aunt, whose death from lupus-related complications at age 19 provided the story behind the song. Its new incarnation removes the theatrics of production, however, pairing Gaga’s vocals with nothing but a piano and the raw power of the tune’s emotional lyrics.

The accompanying video continues the loose narrative set forth in previous clips from the Joanne era, picking up as Gaga sings, plays instruments, and wanders outdoors. Like the “John Wayne” music video, Gaga’s latest ends with her walking in the woods by herself.

Released late last year as the third single from Joanne in parts of Europe, the title cut has yet to impact domestic radio as an official single, though Gaga is expected to perform it at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. The performance will mark her fourth consecutive appearance on the Grammys stage. She is also up for two awards at the 2018 ceremony: Best Pop Solo Performance for “Million Reasons,” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Joanne.

Outside of the reimagined version of “Joanne,” more new music from Gaga is around the corner. Mother Monster is currently prepping for the release of her musical drama film A Star Is Born, the soundtrack for which shecrafted original tunes alongside Bradley Cooper, Jason Isbell, Dave Cobb, Mark Ronson, and Lukas Nelson. Another album, touted by producer DJ White Shadow as the “little sister” to Gaga’s 2013 album ARTPOP, is also in the works.
