U2 performs tribute song for Anthony Bourdain at the Apollo Theater

U2 frontman Bono took a moment between sets at the Apollo Theater Monday night to pay his respects to Anthony Bourdain, the celebrity chef behind CNN’s Parts Unknown who died by suicide last week.

“We lost a lot of very inspiring, useful people and gained a few useless people,” Bono began during a SiriusXM invite-only concert for subscribers. “It’s hard, though, to lose a friend, to lose a mate, and this band has been through that and music lost some great people who gave up on their own life and that makes it kinda harder.”

Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington were some of those figures in the music world who died from apparent suicides in the last few years, though Bono also referenced the “fashion” industry. Designer Kate Spade died just a few days before Bourdain.

“And now this great storyteller, who I’m sure had stories he had to tell us,” Bono concluded before dedicating “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” to Bourdain and “his friends and family.”

SiriusXM’s The U2 Experience will air on channel 30 on Wednesday, June 13 at 5:00 p.m. ET, in addition to a simultaneous airing on Howard Stern’s Howard 101 channel.

Bourdain, at the age of 61, was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Kaysersberg, France on Friday, having been on location for Parts Unknown, according to CNN. Many celebrities and chefs paid tribute to Bourdain in the proceeding days, while Queens of the Stone Age performed their own musical homage in Denmark with a rendition of “Long Slow Goodbye.”
