Madonna's daughter recreates mom's 'Frozen' music video in haunting tribute

Lourdes Leon has heavily referenced the iconic video for her new Lolahol song, "Spelling."

Madonna's daughter Lourdes Leon is keeping it in the family with her art. The singer has recreated her mother's iconic "Frozen" video in the accompanying haunting visual for her new track, "Spelling."

Released under her stage name, Lolahol, "Spelling" features Leon channeling her inner witch as she fronts several shot-for-shot references to Madonna's "Frozen" music video, including the opening scene in which she levitates above the ground — just as her mom did in 1998.

As the song progresses, Leon evokes another sequence from "Frozen," in which her body evaporates into a flock of crows before a large doberman enters the frame in a close-up, mimicking a shot from Madonna's video.

Both videos conclude with the respective performers contorting their bodies while standing next to dancers, though in Leon's clip her backup crew is made up of different performers, while in Madonna's video the singer's costars are different versions of her.

The "Spelling" video's references to "Frozen" hold a layered meaning, as the latter single's parent album, Ray of Light, was largely inspired by Madonna's shifting worldview after her daughter's birth in 1996.

Since then, Leon has collaborated with her mother on a few occasions, including on their 2012 song, "Superstar," from Madonna's MDNA album, and in several video interludes that played on stage as part of Madonna's Madame X tour in 2019.

Following a bacterial infection health scare over the summer that forced the postponement of her upcoming Celebration world tour, Madonna shared gratitude for her children's support in an Instagram message.

"As a mother, you can really get caught up in the needs of your children and the seemingly endless giving," she said. "But when the chips were down, my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before. It made all the difference.

In 2022, Lourdes kicked off her solo music career with the Lolahol single "Lock&Key," which contained reference-heavy lyrics — particularly a nod to an iconic Lady Gaga meme lifted from an interview she gave in 2011.

"No sleep, next plane, no sleep, make up, next club, next car, next plane, no sleep, no fear," Leon sang on the track, a slight variation of Gaga's remarks in the interview, which chronicled her early-career lifestyle consisting of "no sleep, bus, club, 'nother club, 'nother club, plane, next place, no sleep, no fear."
