Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood cancels tour after 'emergency hospital treatment'

The Smile, which also includes Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, won’t perform its scheduled concerts in Europe next month.

Radiohead offshoot band The Smile is canceling its European tour due to a medical emergency.

The group announced Friday that Jonny Greenwood, the lead guitarist and keyboardist for both bands, underwent emergency medical treatment for an infection this week. “A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care,” the band said in a statement on social media. “Mercifully he is now out of danger and will soon return home.”

“We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery,” the statement continued. “To that end, the Smile tour of Europe in August is canceled.”

The statement also noted that refunds for all canceled shows will soon be available. “We all wish Jonny a speedy recovery.”

The Smile, which also features drummer Tom Skinner and Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke, debuted with a surprise performance in May 2021 as part of Glastonbury’s Live at Worthy Farm stream, a project that also included Coldplay and Haim. The group released its first album, A Light for Attracting Attention, in April 2022, and toured extensively in support of the project. The Smile’s second album, Wall of Eyes, released in January 2024. The band had already played around two dozen shows and festivals after the album’s release. The Smile’s most recent show took place at Roma Summer Fest in Rome on June 24.

Radiohead has not released an entirely new album since 2016’s A Moon-Shaped Pool; however, the group publicized a plethora of archival music and material in 2019 and 2020, and reissued Kid A with bonus material as Kid A Mnesia in 2021. The band also had plans to tour in 2021, but canceled them due to the pandemic.

During Radiohead’s inactivity, all of its members have released music under side or solo projects.Yorke wrote the score for Suspiria in 2018 and released his solo album Anima in 2019, while guitarist Ed O’Brien dropped his solo album Earth in 2020, which also featured contributions from bassist Colin Greenwood. Drummer Philip Selway dropped his solo album Strange Dance in 2023, and Greenwood collaborated with Dudu Tassa on their joint album Jarak Qaribak the same year.

Greenwood has also composed scores for a number of films, including Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog, both of which earned him Best Original Score Oscar nominations.

"It still feels like quite a strange thing to do," Greenwood previously told Entertainment Weekly of making the jump to film scores. "But I enjoy the connection with the director. It's a bit like being in a band, but with someone who's making a film instead of songwriting."
