Dancing With the Stars: Season 28, episode 7

Yes, insists host Tom Bergeron, he actually was in costume for Halloween Night on Dancing With the Stars. “I’m a grey-haired Ryan Seacrest!” he declared. You know what was also fun? All those 9s that were awarded by the judges through the night. Even Bergeron was blown away by the trio’s generosity. “You do have other paddles right?” he quipped.

Let’s recap what had them feeling so magnanimous.

Sean Spicer and Lindsay Arnold: The costume department got busy trolling the former press secretary again by dressing him up as Frankenstein to jive to “Monster Mash.” It took a whole four hours to get him ready! And it will take less than two seconds for his wife to slap him upside the head later for his comment about how he “understands why it takes her so long to get ready.” Yep, you’re a monster, Spicey. “It lacked jive content,” said judge Len Goodman. “You know you are not the best dancer on the show. But you always come out and try your hardest.” “The monster part was perfection!” added judge Bruno Tonioli. “The jive was six feet behind. Your timing is not your strong suit.” But his voting audience is! Score: 18 out of 30

Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov: No Kate, the rumba doesn’t require you to dance like a little machine that sucks up dirt on the floor. The rumba asks you to sway those wicked hips with passion and seduce a hungry audience! She could have displayed a little more longing in her face, but the crowd went wild nonetheless. “That was a beautiful and haunting rumba,” said Tonioli. “You were oozing this kind of confidence,” added Carrie Ann Inaba. “You were shining very brightly.” Score: 24 out of 30

Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten: Playing the role of a bad pageant girl, the Bachelorette crowned herself at the end of her jazz performance with a sparkly tiara. But the judges weren’t ready to dub her queen of the night just yet. “You are disconnected from the movements,” said Inaba. “It’s almost like there is a bit of shyness to you.” Score: 25 out of 30

Karamo Brown and Jenna Johnson: Jenna was awfully excited about carving that pumpkin but not quite as giddy as Karamo, who straight-up freaked out over doing the Paso doble to Beyonce’s “I’m a Survivor.” Also, their face makeup was legit awesome; even Goodman gave the BTS team an attaboy. “No lack of power or purpose in that one,” said Tonioli. “You are like a sonic boom!” added Inaba. “There’s something when you release that kind of emotion when you dance. You let it rip!” Score: 25 out of 30

Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber: The pop star’s ponytails worked overtime during the tango that was sometimes upstaged by those nifty skeletons projected on the dance floor. But it still scared up lots of sweet feedback. “Halloween is en pointe. Everyone is bringing their A-game!” said Inaba. “I’m so glad you’ve come back to life with a terrific tango. I congratulate you, Sasha. Lots of proper dancing.” Score: 27 out of 30

Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko: The country singer got to play a vampire Jezebel while dancing the Argentine tango to “Whatever Lola Wants.” She enjoyed showing off her literal chops but admitted later that she was hiding a pretty painful fracture to her ribs. “You are evolving as a dancer, every minute every day,” said Inaba. “You were so full of Argentine characterization,” added Goodman. “Well done.” Score: 27 (her first 9 from Goodman!) out of 30

Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson: The comedian masterfully figured out how to jive to The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s “Time Warp,” despite having to wear a slime green lizard outfit that really made no sense. At least it helped him go first for the night! “You were rocking and I was reeling,” said Goodman. “I love the fact you’ve taken a cult classic but you reimagined it,” added Tonioli. Score: 27 out of 30

James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater: Looking like a mix of the opera’s phantom and Rorschach from Watchmen, the Dawson’s Creek star put a spell on the judges with his Viennese waltz (despite his minor slip on the dance floor). “You were like the prince of darkness, pulling all the strings,” said Tonioli. “It was such a powerful performance.” “It was so flawless and so powerful,” said Inaba. Score: 27 out of 30

And now, those team dances!

Team Trick (Hannah, James, Ally, Lauren): Goodness, when did these celebrities have the time to learn all these fancy tango-and-paso-doble steps to “Somebody’s Watching Me?” Remarkably, they kept it all in sync (though the smoke and dimmed lights probably helped their cause). “That was all put together with fantastic, interesting choreography,” said Goodman. “I loved it,” added Inaba. “It was really, really powerful.” Score: 27 out of 30

Team Treat (Karamo, Sean, Kel, Kate): Ooh the red balloons from It! Sticking the boys in upright beds helped to drive home the “Beautiful Hightmare” theme, but Sean’s awkwardness didn’t do the group any favors. “That was nightmarishly entertaining,” said Tonioli. “What a concept. Not everyone was always on time. But I really love the effort.” “Sean almost kept up!” added Inaba. “I like the fun of it. I can tell you enjoyed the rehearsals,” continued Goodman. Score: 24 out of 30

The bottom two couples — based on judges’ scores from both last week and this week and live audience votes — were Karamo and Jenna and Kate and Pasha.

Goodman had to make the final choice. The latest celebrity to leave is Karamo.
