Cher, Mariah Carey, Sinéad O'Connor, and Lenny Kravitz lead Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations

It’s time to meet the 15 nominees vying for their respective spots in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 

On Saturday, the Rock Hall announced its 2024 nominees, many of whom are appearing on this year’s ballot for the very first time. They include Mariah Carey, Cher, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Sinéad O’Connor, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade, and Foreigner. 

The other five artists — Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, and A Tribe Called Quest — have all appeared on the ballot at least once before. In order to be eligible to enter the Hall of Fame, the artist must have released their first single or album in 1999 or earlier. 

“This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a press release. “Continuing in the true spirit of rock & roll, these artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

O'Connor's nomination comes after the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer died last year at 65. She was recently honored with a poignant performance of the Prince song she famously covered by Annie Lennox during the In Memoriam segment at the 2024 Grammys.

Cher's nom, however, comes less than two months after she publicly rebuked the Rock Hall for failing to nominate her. "I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars," she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show, adding that she's "never gonna change" her mind and that "they can just you-know-what themselves.”

As for whom will actually be inducted in the forthcoming ceremony? Well, that will be decided by the Hall of Fame’s international voting body, which consists of more than 1,000 artists, historians, and music industry members. 

The inductees are set to be announced in late April, and a ceremony will take place in Cleveland sometime this fall. Following its success last year, the event will stream live again on Disney+, with a special airing on ABC at a later date. It will also be available to stream live on Hulu the next day.
