RuPaul shocks Drag Race after adding Death Becomes Her twist to immunity

Mama Ru just stirred the potion and added another layer to the immunity twist's return in season 16.

RuPaul just introduced a Drag Race plot twist bigger than the iconic hole in Goldie Hawn's stomach.

After previously gagging the season 16 queens by introducing the return of elimination immunity for the first time in over a decade, Mama Ru added a Death Becomes Her-themed twist to the competition by gifting two new cast members with immunity potions modeled after Isabella Rossellini's famed vial from the 1992 comedy classic also starring Meryl Streep.

Friday's episode saw the whole group of contestants meeting face-to-face for the first time, after Sapphira Cristál and Plane Jane won their respective episodes' Maxi Challenge and subsequent lip-sync duel. Both queens re-entered the Werk Room to find mysterious boxes baring their names. Inside they each found a golden bottle containing a lavender "immunity potion" that could save them from being eliminated in the future.

"I'm fully expecting Isabella Ru-ssellini to come out of the floor," Plasma said of the bottles in a confessional, while Sapphira added: "Some of these queens look so thirsty right now. They're like, 'Well, I want immunity. People in hell want ice water."

RuPaul then entered the room to elaborate on the twist, which included a new set of rules slightly different than what Drag Race fans might expect.

"Sapphira and Plane Jane, I see you've both received your immunity potions. Now, you can use it to save yourself from elimination — or, you can use it to save another queen!" RuPaul told the girls, who reacted to the news with open-mouthed shock.

RuPaul elaborated that both Sapphira and Plane Jane may also choose to hold their potions for a future episode of their choice, so it wouldn't necessarily need to be used on the following week's challenge like it was back on season 5.

Later, after the queens worked the runway in the Mother of all Balls fashion challenge, both Sapphira and Plane decided to hold on to their immunity for another week, also declining to save one of their sisters with the potion.

The introduction of potion vials coupled with immunity is a clear nod to Rossellini's character in Death Becomes Her. In Robert Zemeckis' Oscar-winning film, the model-actress plays Lisle Von Rhuman, a wealthy socialite who possesses a magic potion that grants eternal life to characters played by Hawn and Streep.

This isn't the first time Death Becomes Her has played an integral part in Drag Race her-story; season 7, episode 6 — titled "RuPaullywood Stories" — included a Death Becomes Her-inspired runway theme that tasked the queens with dressing up in grim attire related to grisly deaths.

RuPaul's Drag Race season 16 continues Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Watch RuPaul introduce the Death Becomes Her immunity twist above.
