Veep wins best comedy cast at SAG Awards

It’s a victory for the Selina Meyer administration — the cast of Veep took home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday evening.

Cast member Matt Walsh channeled his less-than-effective spokesman character Mike McLintock while accepting the award on behalf of the cast.

“I was hand chosen because I play a spokesperson — I’m very well-spoken on the show and in real life,” he said, before stumbling through an acceptance speech. (Timothy Simons, who plays Jonah Ryan, yelled, “You’re blowing this!”)

Walsh thanked “our leader” Julia Louis-Dreyfus — who also won best actress in a comedy on Sunday, but wasn’t in attendance at the ceremony — before finishing his speech by joking, “We do sincerely love that you gave us this wonderful Grammy.”

Although this is the HBO political satire’s first victory in this category, it isn’t a stranger to awards love. Veep has taken home the Emmy for best comedy three years in a row, and Louis-Dreyfus has won the best comedy actress Emmy six years in a row.

The sixth season saw former President Selina Meyer (Dreyfus) focused on building her presidential library; however, at the end of the season, she surprised her staffers by announcing that she plans to take one stab at running for president. A few months after the season ended, news broke that the comedy’s upcoming seventh season would be its last.

“It became clear this season should be the last season,” Louis-Dreyfus told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “We don’t want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series.”

Veep beat out black-ish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, GLOW, and Orange is the New Black.
