Glenn Close wins Best Actress at SAG Awards

Though her character’s husband was the one who took home the prize in The Wife, this time the honor is all Glenn Close’s. The actress has won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

Close, 71, won the accolade for her performance as an overlooked literary spouse, opposite Jonathan Pryce.

“I am so proud to be in this union,” she said during her speech. “I am so proud to receive this award from my fellow actors. And I think of all of us sitting in this room and I think of all of you watching on TV, all of you who haven’t had the chances that we’ve had, and I salute you with this.”

Based on the novel of the same name, The Wife centers on Joan Castleman, the wife of a critically acclaimed and best-selling novelist, who may or may not have been secretly writing his books for him. The conflict comes to a head when the husband is awarded the Nobel Prize and Joan accompanies him to Sweden. The film, which grossed $8.2 million in a limited theatrical run in 2018, expanded after Close took home a Golden Globe for her role in the movie.

At the SAG Awards, Close beat out a competitive field of nominees consisting of Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
