Bestselling author Sarah J. Maas surprised fans on Thursday by releasing the prologue and first chapter of House of Flame and Shadow on her website five days before the book's release on Jan. 30.
The chapters pick up almost immediately after the shocking ending of book two, where (spoiler alert!) after learning the horrifying truth about the parasitic Asteri, half-fae/half-human Bryce Quinlan ended up in Prythian with the Inner Circle — a.k.a. she dropped right into the world of Maas' other fan-favorite series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, in a massive crossover event (We're still waiting to see if that means Maas' third series, Throne of Glass, plays into this at all ... ).
While the prologue deals with the aftermath of Bryce's mate Hunt Athalar and brother Ruhn Danaan being captured and tortured by the Hind, the first chapter finally reveals what happens after Azriel and Rhysand meet Bryce.
But don't just take our word for it — read the beginning of Crescent City book three on Maas' official website now.
House of Flame and Shadow officially hits bookstores on Jan. 30.
