The Beekeeper stings Mean Girls as January box office slows to a halt

It's round three of Jason Statham vs. The Plastics.

North Shore High has a new Queen Bee and it’s… Jason Statham?

Scratch that, The Plastics are still the coolest part of school, but those Mean Girls have stiff competition at the weekend box office in the form of Statham’s The Beekeeper. The two films are duking it out for the top spot in a week with no new wide releases and the numbers are tight as moviegoers catch up on the hottest blockbusters of the month.

Comscore reports The Beekeeper taking with a projected $7.4 million for its $42.2 million domestic total ($104.2 million internationally). Mean Girls trailed close behind with an additional $7.3 million bringing its domestic tally to $60.8 million ($83.4 million worldwide).

The action-thriller and musical adaptation may not have much in common, but this marks their third consecutive week in the top two spots. January is typically a quiet release month, clearing the path for their success, but with February on the horizon, their uninterrupted reign may have enjoyed its final weekend. Next week marks the release of Argylle, a buzzy spy-movie from Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service) that has caught the attention of action fans and many misguided Swifties. Given the latter’s penchant for breaking box office records, the Queen Bees may be no more.

Elsewhere, Timothée Chalamet's eccentric chocolatier, Wonka continues to make the big bucks. Coming in third, the musical from Paddington director Paul King has earned an additional $5.9 million for a total of $195.1 million ($552 million globally). The film offers an origin story for the character previously portrayed by Gene Wilder in 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, a film that King kept in mind throughout the entire production process.

"I didn't want to reinvent those things 'cause it felt like that '71 movie had come up with these incredibly enduring, iconic looks," he told EW in 2023. "What I wanted this movie to be was like a companion piece to that movie. If you imagine those people in that world 25 years earlier, that was my starting process. Eventually, he would grow into that person and that factory."

Migration movie still

Illumination Entertainment & Universal Pictures

Another family film finding success at the box office is Universal’s Migration, which follows a family of ducks lost in New York City. The animated film from White Lotus creator Mike White picked up another $5.1 million for its $101.2 million total ($206.1 million globally).

Rounding out the top 5 is the R-rated rom-com Anyone but You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Now in its sixth week of release, the film has earned a projected $4.8 million increasing its domestic haul to $71.1 million, and its worldwide total to $126.5 million.
