Donna Summer musical headed to Broadway in spring 2018

Donna Summer is headed to Broadway.

SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical, which traces the life and career of the late disco legend, has been confirmed for a Broadway run starting this spring, in the thick of Tonys season. The news comes only a little more than a month after the production made its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse and Theatre in California. The initial engagement has been twice extended and is currently slated to end on Dec. 24.

Told through the dramatic lens of her final concert, Summer explores the artist’s meteoric rise and tragic fall, and features three actresses in the main role as well as more than 20 of Summer’s iconic hits in the score, including “Love to Love You, Baby,” “Bad Girls,” and “Hot Stuff.”

The book is written by Colman Domingo, Robert Cary, and Des McAnuff, with the production directed by Des McAnuff. More details on the Broadway transfer are forthcoming, but at La Jolla, Tony winner LaChanze (The Color Purple), Ariana DeBose (A Bronx Tale), and Storm Lever (Playhouse’s Freaky Friday) played, respectively, “Diva Donna,” “Disco Donna,” and “Duckling Donna.”

Summer is set to begin previews at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre on March 28, 2018 before opening on April 23. Tickets will go on sale January 8 through Ticketmaster.com.
