The Band’s Visit cued up a massive night at Sunday’s Tony Awards, capturing 10 prizes including Best Musical.
The show, an intimate tale about an Egyptian police orchestra stranded overnight in a tiny Israeli town, beat out the stage adaptations of Mean Girls, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, and Frozen for the top musical honor.
As The Band’s Visit winners collected their prizes, many referenced the musical’s themes of tolerance and cultures coming together. Tony Shalhoub, winner of Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, spoke of his father arriving at Ellis Island from Lebanon as a child. “May we, their descendants, never lose sight of what they taught us,” he said in his acceptance speech.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the buzzy, big-budget London import that continues the stories of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, won six prizes including the Tony for Best Play. The night’s revival prizes went to the musical Once on This Island and the play Angels in America. Andrew Garfield, accepting his first Tony for his role in Tony Kushner’s epic, dedicated the award to the LGBTQ community and made an emphatic call for equality, saying, “We are all sacred and we all belong so let’s just all bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked.”
The telecast, which aired live on CBS and was hosted by Josh Groban (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) and Sara Bareilles (Waitress), featured performances by the co-hosts and many of the nominated shows, as well as Bruce Springsteen (who received a special Tony for his show Springsteen on Broadway). In one of the night’s most emotional moments, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School came out on stage and performed “Seasons of Love” from Rent. Their drama teacher, Melody Herzfeld, was also honored at the ceremony.
