Broadway-bound Magic Mike musical sets world premiere

It’s been so long since the last time we heard anything about the Magic Mike musical, one might presume to never get the opportunity to hear songs like, if we’re just spitballing here, “Merrily We G-String Along” or something. But Channing Tatum and the boys are ready to unveil what they’ve been working on.

With Tatum, Steven Soderbergh, Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kiernan on board as producers, Magic Mike The Musical has set its world premiere in Boston ahead of a Broadway debut, it was announced Thursday.

The most Xquisite theater troupe will drop trow and take a bow for preview performances at the Emerson Colonial Theatre beginning Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019. Sunday, Dec. 15 will mark its official opening and the production will run in Boston through Jan. 5, 2020 before hitting the Big Apple.

Casting is still being kept close to the leather vest, but there are a number of familiar names behind the scenes.

Trip Cullman, who directed the critically acclaimed Choir Boy on Broadway, is at the helm, while Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the book. The production also flaunts an original score by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winners Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, and choreography by Camille A. Brown (Once on This Island).

“When we were shooting Magic Mike, I looked at myself in a thong and thought: ‘Well, Chan, say goodbye to your career!’ So the idea that seven years later a Pulitzer Prize-winning creative team would be making a full-fledged musical prequel is definitive proof that God loves strippers,” Tatum said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited about the next chapter in the Magic Mike story. So get ready, Boston. The road to Broadway begins on Nov. 30!”

The musical is actually a prequel to 2012’s Magic Mike, which was directed by Soderbergh and produced by Jacobs, Wechsler, the film’s screenwriter Carolin, and its star Tatum. Jacobs took the helm on Magic Mike XXL.

As described in a press release, “this original stage production tells the story of college-student-turned-male-entertainer Mike Lane. Struggling to make ends meet, Mike takes a job dancing at an exclusive night club… and winds up loving every minute of it. But as he scrambles to hide his alter ego from his dad and girlfriend, he finds himself needing to make some difficult choices. Can Mike follow his dreams without losing more than his clothes?”

“Magic Mike was made for the Broadway stage,” Cullman said. “I can’t imagine a more creative and fun team of artists to collaborate with to make this show soar.”
