Veep: Does the current political climate change the way we watch?

On this week’s Bingeworthy, hosts Jessica Shaw and Touré are talking politics… as they’re portrayed on our favorite TV shows.

HBO’s Veep follows the escapades of former V.P. Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her staff as they navigate the day-to-day games of Washington, D.C., and try to establish their legacy with hilarious results. The new season just kicked off on Sunday and Shaw and Touré are ready to get political over it.

“In this current political climate that we’re living in, when I tuned in for the first episode I was a little bit worried,” says Shaw, adding that some elements of the show are so over the top that it becomes hard to believe a politician would really do such ridiculous things. “We happen to live in a country right now where there’s some things that you would not have believed would be happening a year ago.”

When asked if that changed his viewing of Veep, Touré responds that it hasn’t. “I think the dynamics of Trump World changes it for House of Cards because it’s a serious political show so they have to say, ‘How do we respond to the rise of Trump?'” he explains. “Veep is totally different in that it exists sort of inside but outside the political world. It’s not a direct commentary on politics; it’s just a commentary on these madcap people who happen to work in and around Washington. I don’t expect more from Veep because of Trump.”

When Shaw points out that the show seems less crazy when compared with everything we see when we open a newspaper daily, Touré admits that he actually finds Veep to provide light relief. “I find the story of Selina Meyer a great escape from what’s going on because it’s such a farce, it’s so madcap and crazy,” he says. Before adding, “I could imagine the Trump White House looks as insane as Veep portrays these worlds and these sort of people.”
