Bat-signal lights up Los Angeles City Hall to honor late Adam West

Gotham City went west Thursday evening when Los Angeles City Hall was lit with the iconic Bat-signal to honor the late Adam West, the actor who played Batman in the 1960s television series and died last Friday at the age of 88.

To pay tribute to West’s legacy as the caped crusader, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck switched on the signal to cheers and chants of, “Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na… Batman!”

Beck joked about how, as a real Chief of Police, he’s always wanted to flip that light switch. “I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to turn on the Bat-signal.”

A surprise appearance from Burt Ward, who costarred with West as sidekick Robin rounded out the tribute. “My friend Adam would want every single one of you to be incredibly happy and to be joyous,” he said, “because he spent his entire life as a performer making people happy, making them laugh, and making this world a better place.”

West died of leukemia on June 9 and has received an outpour of tributes on social media, including ones from fellow Dark Knight actors Ben Affleck and Val Kilmer. Watch the lighting ceremony above.
