Preacher showrunner says season 2 is 'no less crazy'

Executive producer Sam Catlin previews the upcoming season, which kicks off June 25 with a two-night event

A junkie vampire. A missing God. An entire town wiped off the face of the planet by exploding cow excrement. The first season of AMC’s comic book adaptation Preacher had no shortage of craziness. And showrunner Sam Catlin insists season 2, which premieres June 25, will be every bit as weird.

“I’m disgusted with our network executives,” deadpans Catlin, who developed the show with fellow EPs Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. “It’s just a sign of the decay of American civilization that they’re letting us do this stuff. They’ve sort of fallen asleep at the switch. No, I’m being facetious of course. They’ve been great, and it’s a crazy show, and it’s certainly no less crazy this season.”

Characters left standing at the end of season 1 included Dominic Cooper’s superpower-possessing Jesse Custer, Ruth Negga’s criminally-minded Tulip O’Hare, and Joe Gilgun’s bloodsucker Cassidy, all of whom set off in the finale to find God and either lend him a hand or “kick his ass.”

“Season 2 hits the road,” says Catlin. “It basically starts where the comic starts, in a lot of ways. The church has burned down, God is missing, Jesse has this power, and he’s going to find Him somewhere down the road, and hold him to account. So, that is where we start. We’re out into the wide wide world after sort of being cooped up in this little town. We bring in all sorts of crazy characters from the comic that we had to really restrain ourselves from bringing in too early in season 1. So that’s been a lot of fun. We get to shoot in New Orleans, which we’ve loved doing. And it’s bigger. I like to say, ‘It’s no more money, but it’s much bigger!'”
