The Handmaid’s Tale is Margaret Atwood’s most famous novel, but it is far from her only one. Now, following the success of Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, Netflix is coming out with a miniseries adaptation of another Atwood work: Alias Grace.

Atwood’s 1996 novel is based on the real-life story of Grace Marks, a poor Irish immigrant to Canada who was convicted of murdering her employer and his housekeeper, even though she may not have been guilty. Netflix’s adaptation is written and produced by Sarah Polley, directed by Mary Harron, and stars Sarah Gadon as Grace. As she is imprisoned and treated for hysteria for a crime she may not have committed, Grace wonders about the gendered perception of her: “‘Murderess’ is a strong word to have attached to you. ‘Murderer’ is merely brutal. I’d rather be a murderess than a murderer, if those were the only choices.”
