Supergirl boss Greg Berlanti addresses Sanvers future

Ever since it was announced that Floriana Lima would not be a series regular next season of Supergirl, fans have worried that the relationship between her character Maggie and Chyler Leigh’s Alex may be headed for heartbreak.

Attending a reunion panel for Everwood at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday, executive producer Greg Berlanti addressed the couple’s future, noting that Lima’s recurring status wouldn’t necessarily mean a lesser presence for the duo.

“I don’t think so,” Berlanti said as to whether this change would be noticeably felt. “If any character people love is not there as much as they want them there, they’re going to be upset that they’re not. For my perspective, I’d say we will use her as much as we can.”

For fans worried this may spell the end of the Sanvers relationship, Berlanti played coy. “I don’t want to say too much about the story aspects of it, but we got into it wanting to tell the story of Alex because she was a lead on the show and no matter what, we want to continue exploring Alex’s romantic life,” Berlanti said. “We get to do it in as much as actors want to come play and work with us as much as we can. It’s obviously been a really successful element of the show. We love telling the stories.”

Still, Berlanti recognized that this is the nature of the business. “It’s so hard in this business to get everybody swimming in the same direction,” he said. “We’re very blessed with that story line and actors involved with it, and the audience enjoyment of it. You never want to see those things go away, so we’ll see what happens.”

“I think [Floriana is] wonderful on the show, and she’s got some real ardent fans, and she should,” he said. “Of course we wanted more of her, but she’s got other things in the hopper and other things she wants to consider. We’d love to have her back as much as possible.”

Supergirl will return Monday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
