Grey's Anatomy recasts Owen's sister with Abigail Spencer

Grey’s Anatomy is going through a casting shake-up ahead of season 14.

Abigail Spencer will replace Bridget Regan as Owen’s sister Megan Hunt on the ABC medical drama, EW has learned. The Timeless star has booked a multi-episode arc since Regan was unavailable to return due to a scheduling conflict. Regan currently stars alongside Grey’s Anatomy alum Eric Dane on The Last Ship.

In season 12, it was revealed that Owen’s sister, a fellow army medic, was presumed dead in a helicopter crash, which caused a divide between her brother Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and her former boyfriend Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson). Regan appeared in the role during a season 13 episode that included flashbacks to their time in the army together. It was subsequently revealed in the season 13 finale that Megan was actually found alive — though Regan didn’t seem to appear in the finale, as viewers only saw a tuft of red hair on a stretcher.

Megan’s arrival should provide for good drama in season 14, particularly for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), as she just dropped her guard with new flame Riggs when they got the news about Megan. For the record, Riggs was on the outs with Megan when she went missing after he cheated on her. Her reappearance will also be a whirlwind of emotions for Owen, as he’s torn between elation that she’s alive and guilt that he’s gone on living his life while she was locked up by insurgents for the last decade.

As previously announced, Kim Raver will be reprising her role as Dr. Teddy Altman for an arc in season 14. Teddy was treating Megan at her Germany-based military hospital, speaking to Owen’s estranged wife Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) over the phone about her condition in the finale before Megan was transferred to Seattle.

Grey’s Anatomy will return with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
