Orange Is the New Black creator's American Princess gets greenlight at Lifetime

Jenji Kohan serves as executive producer alongside Tara Herrmann and Jamie Denbo, who created the series

The mind behind Netflix’s hit dramedy Orange is the New Black is spreading her small screen wings. Jenji Kohan’s newest scripted show American Princess has just received a ten-episode order from Lifetime.

The series centers on a Manhattan socialite whose lavish wedding plans are upended when, hours before the ceremony, she discovers her fiancé has been cheating on her. To cope with her outrage, she escapes to the countryside where she finds herself smack dab in the middle of a Renaissance Fair, according to a Lifetime press release.

“It’s incredibly relatable to want to parachute from one’s life in difficult times,”Lifetime EVP and Head of Programming, Liz Gateley says. “In Jenji, Jamie [Denbo] and Tara’s [Herrmann] hands, we know this will be hilarious and special.”

Denbo, whose previous acting credits include OITNB and Ronna & Beverly, created the series and will write and executive produce. Herrmann — who serves as an executive producer on OITNB as well as this summer’s Netflix breakout GLOW alongside Kohan — will join both Denbo and Kohan in executive producing as well.

All episodes of Orange is the New Black and GLOW are available for streaming on Netflix.
