You're the Worst writer tapped for How I Met Your Mother spin-off

Alison Bennett will tackle the project in its third incarnation

Will the third time be the charm — and the greenlight — for the How I Met Your Mother spin-off?

20th Century Fox TV, the studio that was home to How I Met Your Mother, has tapped You’re the Worst writer-producer Alison Bennett to pen the pilot for How I Met Your Father, a long-gestating spin-off to the long-running CBS comedy, EW has confirmed.

The first attempt came in 2014, after HIMYM ended following its nine-season run, in the form of the CBS pilot How I Met Your Dad, which was written by How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas along with Up All Night creator Emily Spivey, and featured Greta Gerwig in the lead role and Meg Ryan as narrator. Last year, 20th Century Fox TV took another stab at the project, that time with This Is Us writer-producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (who have since been promoted at This Is Us to co-showrunners alongside This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman). And now Bennett, whose credits also include The Awesomes and Idiotsitter, is expected to take the project in a different direction, though it still will revolve around a mother looking back at how she met her spouse. No network is attached at this time,

Bays and Thomas will serve as executive producers.
