How likely Big Little Lies season 2 is, according to the cast

The Big Little Liars cast and crew don't know if there's going to be a season 2 yet — but that doesn't stop everyone who comes their way (EW included) from asking about the potential for more episodes.

They can't blame us for wanting more: The HBO drama, adapted from Liane Moriarity's novel of the same name, was one of this year's most talked-about series thanks to its A-list cast — Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz star — and its powerful look at complicated, destructive relationships. And now, after winning five Emmys at Sunday night's awards, it seems even more likely that it'll return to our screens.

Until an official announcement is made, though, let's look back at the many times the Big Little Lies team have answered questions about the possibility of a second season.

Liane Moriarity (The Sydney Morning Herald, April)

"The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn't write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we'll see what happens."

Reese Witherspoon (The Ellen DeGeneres Show, May)

"We hope so. I mean, I feel like it's — Nicole [Kidman] and I produced as well, so we've been talking to the writer, Liane Moriarty, who wrote the book, about just new ideas of what these characters could do. But it seems like people just love the characters, so hopefully we can go on."

Nicole Kidman (EW, July)

"If we can do it, then it will be done. I believe their stories warrant it and I don't want to abandon them. We don't want to sell them short, either. But I'm hoping we can find it if we take the leap."

David E. Kelly (EW, August)

"We don't know yet. We're kicking it around. If we feel that the material warrants it, we'll do it. Everybody's game for getting the band back together, but we want to make sure that we've got the music to justify it. That decision hasn't been made yet, and it'll be story-driven when it is."

Witherspoon (The Hollywood Reporter, August)

"Honestly, it's totally in [novelist] Liane Moriarty's court. The ball is definitely in her court because these characters were born of her mind and her imagination, and we just want to see if she's interested in creating more story about these characters. She really created an incredible road map for us that we followed almost to a T. Right now, we're happy if this is all there is. We're optimistic that there might be more."

Kidman (on the Emmys red carpet, September)

"We want to do it! We love these women and it's just trying to move pieces and it's complicated. We love that people want us to do it."

Laura Dern (backstage at the Emmys, September)

"Season 2, if we were to do it again — and that was not the intention — I think all the actors feel ecstatic because we love these characters, but that's up to Liane if she would want to come up with another story."

Moriarity (backstage at the Emmys, September)

"I'm thinking about it. It's a beautiful possibility, that's all I'll say."
