Why South Park is still 'crushing it' in its 21st season

Twenty-one seasons in, South Park is old enough to buy a drink — and perhaps deserving of a toast.

On the latest episode of PeopleTV’s Bingeworthy, hosts Jessica Shaw and Touré concur that Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s irreverent animated series is as sharp as ever.

“This show has been on forever, and it’s still fresh and fun and interesting and real and alive,” Touré says. “They’ve never shied away from politics, and they’re diving into dealing with white supremacy and white people renovating homes. I am so thrilled that this [show] still exists and it still has the teeth and the strength and the balls to do whatever they want — and they still are so funny. It’s hard to maintain comedy over a long period of time. They are crushing it.”

“I totally agree,” Shaw says, adding that the lo-fi aesthetic doesn’t detract one bit from the viewing experience. “Who cares about, you know, the crudely drawn sketches and the animation and everything? I don’t care because the comedy is so good and it’s so biting.”

Regarding the recent season 21 premiere, which tackled Charlottesville, white supremacists, and the decline in blue-collar jobs, Shaw says, “People are going to look back at this season premiere and think this was one of the great ones.”
